Swimming and bathing are very refreshing and exhilirating in the waves. One can walk into the sea about 100 metres without loosing ground. This cove is also the safest place for swimming. Most of the visitors like to have a sunbath and get a good suntan on beach . At many coastal places there are beautiful patches of coral reefs. The underwater views, which are visible during snorkeling, are really marvellous. Gradually, it has been transformed to a tourist spot of great interest. It is an ideal place for a sunbath during the winter. Tourists can also experience the typical Kerala massage from the parlors available a few kilometers away along the beaches.
The Kovalam is also famous for its Ayurveda and Yoga Resorts and treatments retaining the historical legacy of India in the field of traditional medicine. In some theatres you can see the artists performing the traditional Kerala art form - Kathakali, and ethnic martial art - Kalarippayattu. Thiruvananthapuram ( Trivandrum ), the capital city of Kerala, is just 16 km away from Kovalam and getting there is no hassle. But if you are on holiday it is better to stay in Kovalam and visit the city.
Thiruvananthapuram has interesting places to see like the Napier Museum, the Sri Chitra Art Gallery , the Padmanabhaswamy Temple , Puthenmalike Palace, Zoo, Planetarium, Veli Lagoon, Ponmudi hill station etc. SMSM Institute,a State owned handicrafts emporium, is the ideal place to pick up ethnic curios and other articles.

The Bekal Beach is located near Bekal Fort. This fort is one of the best-maintained
historic forts in Kerala. Situated on a headland that extends for 35 acres and
reaches into the Arabian Sea, the Bekal Fort occupies a commanding position
on a promontory. The Bekal Beach extends on either side, with stretches of clear
sand flanked by rows of elegant palm trees. The view from the Bekal Fort of
the green palms, the white sand, the blue sea and the rolling waves is truly

This is the historic beach where Vasco da Gama landed on the 27th of May, 1498
with 170 men in three vessels. The rock studded beach is locally known as Kappakadavu.
An interesting feature of the landscape is the sprawing rock that protrudes
into the sea. The temple on the rock is believed to be 800 years old
