Thiruvathira
Thiruvathira, is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of lord Shiva. It is considered as one of the oldest and most beautiful celebrations of Keralites.
A traditional Hindu festival, Thiruvathira falls as the day of Thiruvathira in the Malayalam month of Dhanu (December - July). On this day Hindus visit Shiva temles.
On
this day, women folk fast for half a day and pray. They forego the normal
rice meal. Special dishes of wheat, plantain, and tender coconuts are prepared.
Poothiruvathira, the first Thiruvathira after the marriage of a girl is celebrated
in a grand style.
It is unique and interesting to note the fact that historically a Keralite woman enjoys an enviable position in the society. In bygone eras In Nair community - which was matriarchal in family structure - the ladies possess and elevated position. She was practically the mistress of her house. Her influence in society and its social structure, customs, stereo types and practices culminates in the evolvement of a grand festival exclusive for womenfolk. This type of festival is rare in any society.
At night the woman folk perform a dance called Thiruvathira Kali or Kaikotti
Kali around a lightened brass lamp singing enthralling songs.
